An orangutan later named Sampurna was rescued on the event date after a farmer found the animal weak and writhing on the ground near a fire-affected palm-oil plantation in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, on Borneo island. The rescue underlines how Indonesia’s forest and land fires are affecting wildlife as well as people, with authorities and conservation groups struggling to contain haze across several provinces.
According to the supplied reporting, the farmer, Jais, was heading to his land when he came across the orangutan near the wildfire site. He gave the animal water and, with other residents, called for help. About two hours later, a wildlife foundation arrived with a veterinarian and treated the animal on site. By then the orangutan had fainted. The rescue team named it Sampurna after the village where it was found.
The wildlife organisation involved, Yayasan Inisiasi Alam Rehabilitasi Indonesia, has already rescued seven orangutans from fire conditions this year, according to the report. Its chief executive said the animal appeared to have collapsed because of severe smoke exposure and a lack of oxygen. The veterinarian said the orangutan did not show serious burn injuries, but did have breathing problems and had vomited. The team estimated the animal to be around 20 years old.
The conditions in West Kalimantan have been especially difficult. The source says the province has been among those hardest hit by the fires, and that smoke from forest and land burning has prompted respiratory illnesses and forced schools in some areas to move classes online. Indonesia has also intensified its efforts to contain the haze across six provinces on Borneo and Sumatra.
The broader fire season has already caused major environmental damage. The Forestry Ministry figures quoted in the report put burned land at 202,010 hectares from January to July, up sharply from 107,465 hectares through June. That scale of burning helps explain why rescue teams are being called to wildlife emergencies as well as human health incidents.
Sampurna was given oxygen through tubes placed in its nose and fluids through an intravenous drip. The plan is to move the orangutan to a rehabilitation centre for further treatment, with the expectation that it will be released back into the wild once it recovers. That recovery will depend on whether the animal can overcome the respiratory stress caused by the smoke.
The rescue also reflects a larger pattern. Conservation workers in fire zones are not just responding to direct burns or stranded animals, but to the long tail of smoke and oxygen deprivation. For orangutans, which already face habitat pressure from plantation expansion and repeated fires, the event date rescue is another example of how quickly disaster conditions can become a wildlife emergency.
The immediate outcome is hopeful: the animal was found alive, treated quickly and placed on a recovery path. But the report also shows that the same fires threatening farmland and communities are forcing conservation workers into repeated emergency responses across Indonesia’s fire belt.
