Stan Kroenke has reached an agreement to add Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels to his sports portfolio, according to a report that says the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027 if the usual approvals are secured.
The deal, announced in a joint press release cited by Reuters via CNA, still needs customary closing conditions and approval from MLB, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment and the Angels themselves. No price was disclosed in the report. Until those approvals are complete, the sale is a signed agreement rather than a final ownership transfer.
If it closes, the Angels would become the latest team in Kroenke's collection. He already owns the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL, the Denver Nuggets in the NBA, the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL, the Colorado Rapids in MLS and Arsenal in the Premier League. That makes the move one of the most expansive additions to a cross-sport holdings empire in recent memory.
For the Angels, the sale ends 23 years of ownership by Arte Moreno, who bought the club in 2003 on the heels of its only World Series title. Moreno's tenure was defined by heavy spending on marquee players, but the team often lacked the depth to keep pace over a full season. The report said the Angels are now heading toward an 11th consecutive losing season and will extend baseball's longest active postseason drought to a 12th year.
Those competitive numbers help explain why the ownership change matters. A new owner does not automatically fix roster problems, but it does alter the strategy room in which those problems get addressed. The Angels are a storied brand in a huge market, and a transaction like this invites immediate questions about spending, stadium economics and how aggressively the club will try to turn its long slump around.
The report also included the kind of language that usually appears when a sale is still waiting on formal completion. Kroenke called the Angels a storied franchise anchored in a great market, while Moreno said his family had been honoured to steward the team for 23 years and believed KSE was the best next owner. Those lines are part celebration, part transition management, but the practical reality is still a regulatory process that can take months.
MLB approval is not a formality, either. Ownership changes at this level are scrutinised because they affect governance, payroll commitments and the public face of the franchise. Until the league signs off, the Angels remain in limbo between one owner and the next. That in-between state is why the deal matters now even before it closes.
The timing is also notable because the first quarter of 2027 is still ahead, meaning the Angels will continue operating under the current structure for the remainder of the season and beyond. Fans who have watched a long run of losing baseball will have to wait before learning what a Kroenke-owned Angels era actually looks like.
For now, the headline is simple: one of baseball's better-known franchises has a new buyer lined up, and the deal threads the team into one of the biggest multi-sport ownership groups in world sport.
