Apple has put John Ternus in the chief executive role, marking a major leadership handoff at one of the world’s most closely watched technology companies.
The change is now reflected on Apple’s leadership page, according to the company as reported by MacRumors. Ternus, Apple’s former hardware engineering chief, joined the company in 2001 and rose through its hardware ranks before becoming vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021.
The move ends Tim Cook’s 15-year run as chief executive. Apple said Cook is now executive chairman of the board and will continue to help the company on select matters, including engagement with policymakers around the world.
The handover places a longtime hardware leader in charge at a moment when Apple remains under pressure to keep its product pipeline moving while navigating global regulation, supply-chain risk and competition across smartphones, wearables and personal computing. The company has not publicly framed the leadership change as part of a broader overhaul, but the succession itself is notable because it elevates an executive known for product and engineering execution rather than a public-facing sales or operations role.
Ternus is 51, which means he could hold the job for a substantial period if Apple keeps him in place through a normal retirement horizon. The source notes that could make for a 10- to 15-year tenure.
